Heinz-Werner Kubitza was born in 1961 in Hermeskeil near Trier. After graduating from high school, he transferred to the upper school of Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Trier, where he graduated in 1981. He then studied Protestant theology and philosophy in Frankfurt, Tübingen, Bonn, and Marburg in order to become a pastor. As a high school student Kubitza was already active in church youth work (CVJM) as a group leader, later in the Marburg Evangelische Studentengemeinde (ESG - Protestant Student Congregation) as a delegate and student of trust. He wrote his dissertation, which was accepted by the University of Marburg in 1991, on a church history topic.

Lorenz, Fiona [3]

Fiona Lorenz was born in the year 1962 in Berlin. After completing her English/American and Japanese Studies in Marburg she trained as a foreign language secretary. From 1988 to 1994 she studied education in Trier. After a series of scientific activities she received her PhD in education from the University of Trier in 2003. From 2002-2005 she worked independently in her own practice as a coach and therapist.

Lütkehaus, Ludger [4]

Prof. Dr. Ludger Lütkehaus, philosopher, deceased 2019

Lütkehaus was born in 1943 in Cloppenburg. He studied German language and literature, philosophy, education, and history at the University of Freiburg. He was professor of literature in Freiburg and is a member of the German P.E.N. Center. In 1979 he received the award of the Schopenhauer Society, in 1996 the Preis für Buch und Kultur (Prize for Book and Culture). Lütkehaus published numerous books and essays on literature, philosophy, and psychology in the 18th to 20th century.

Mahner, Martin [5]

Martin Mahner was born in 1958. He studied biology and geography at the Freie Universität Berlin and received his PhD in zoology (with a minor degree in philosophy of science) in 1992. From 1993 to 1996 he was a postdoctoral fellow under Mario Bunge at the department of philosophy at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, and from 1996 to 1998 lectured at three Berlin universities.

Maier, Robert [6]

Robert Maier, former political consultant and mathematician

Robert Maier was born in Graslitz in 1944. After graduating from high school, he studied mathematics in Giessen and Münster until completing his diploma with a focus on mathematical logic and fundamental research. After leaving the Catholic Church and the Cusanuswerk, he joined the Humanistische Union (Humanistic Union) and the Humanistische Studentenunion (Humanistic Student Union).

Marschall, Horst [7]

Horst Marschall studied mineralogy at the University of Heidelberg, where he subsequently received his doctorate (receiving the university's Ruprecht Karls Prize for the dissertation). From 2005 to 2010 he conducted research at the University of Bristol, the first two years of which were spent as a Marie Curie Research Fellow. From 2011 he worked at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, USA.

Matthäus-Maier, Ingrid [8]

Ingrid Matthäus-Maier was born on September 9, 1945, in Werlte. In 1965 she graduated from high school in Duisburg. She studied law in Giessen and Münster, and then worked as an administrative Law judge in Münster until 1976. She joined the FDP (Free Democratic Party) in 1969. In 1972 she became federal chairwoman of the Junge Demokraten (the FDP's youth organization). After the change of coalition in 1982 ("spiritual-moral change") she left the FDP and joined the SPD (Social Democratic Party).

Merkel, Reinhard [9]

Reinhard Merkel was born in Hof in 1950. He studied law, philosophy, and literature in Bochum, Heidelberg, and Munich, where he also completed the First and Second State Examination in Law. From 1988 to 1990 Merkel was editor of the weekly newspaper "Die Zeit" (feuilleton). In 1991 he was awarded the "Jean-Amery-Preis für Essayistik". After his PhD in Munich in 1993 and his habilitation in Frankfurt/M. in 1997 Merkel received offers of a chair at the universities of Bielefeld, Rostock, and Hamburg.

Metzinger, Thomas [10]

Metzinger was born in 1958. He studied philosophy, ethnology, and theology at the University of Frankfurt. In 1985 he finished his PhD on the mind-body problem. In 1992 he received his habilitation at the Justus Liebig University Giessen. He was appointed professor of the philosophy of cognitive science at the University of Osnabrück in 2000. A short time later he moved to the University of Mainz.

Meyer, Axel [11]

Prof. Dr. Axel Meyer, evolutionary biologist / zoologist

Axel Meyer was born in 1960 in Molln. He studied at the universities of Marburg, Kiel, Miami, and Berkeley. After graduating, he worked as a postdoc with Allan C. Wilson at the University of California, Berkeley, in the department of biochemistry. In 1990 he became assistant professor at Stony Brook University, New York, in the department of ecology and evolution. There he was appointed associate professor in 1993. The University of Constance appointed him to the chair of zoology and evolutionary biology in 1997.
