February 12, 2009, is Charles Darwin's 200th birthday. The following day, Friday, February 13, a ceremony will be held at the German National Library in Frankfurt (Adickesallee 1, 60322 Frankfurt/M) in honour of the founder of the theory of evolution. The event is organized by the Darwin Year Committee of the Giordano Bruno Stiftung and the working group Evolutionary Biology in Verband Biologie, Biowissenschaften & Biomedizin.

The director of the Clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf died on early Friday morning (September 19, 2008) at the age of 63 from the consequences of an aggressive cancer disease. British evolutionary theorist and religious critic Richard Dawkins will receive the Deschner Prize at a public ceremony in Frankfurt on October 12. The prize is awarded by the Giordano Bruno Stiftung (gbs) and is worth €10,000.

With his seminal works on evolutionary theory, and also in particular with his book The God Delusion, which will finally be published in German in September 2007 under the title Der Gotteswahn, Dawkins has made an outstanding contribution to strengthen secular, scientific, and humanistic thinking, explained the gbs directorate.
