Haderer, Gerhard

Gerhard Haderer, caricaturist, illustrator, author

Gerhard Haderer was born in 1951 in Leonding (Upper Austria). He graduated from the Technical College for Commercial and Advertising Graphics in Linz, followed by an apprenticeship as an engraver in Stockholm. In 1984 he published his first satirical drawings. From 1985 numerous caricatures followed in the Austrian magazine Profil, subsequently also in the magazines Wiener, Titanic, GEO, and Stern. Since 1987 he has also been active as a book author. In 2001 he received the German caricature award "Geflügelter Bleistift in Gold" (Winged Pencil in Gold). In 2002 Haderer's book "Das Leben des Jesus" ("The Life of Jesus") provoked heated debates. In 2005 he was even sentenced (in absentia) to six months of imprisonment in Greece for insulting a religious community because of the book. After massive international protests the verdict was revised and Haderer was acquitted. In 2008 he was awarded the Golden Merit of Vienna.
