Bernulf Kanitscheider was born in Hamburg in 1939. He received his PhD in 1964 in Innsbruck on "Das Problem des Bewusstseins" ("The Problem of Consciousness") and habilitated in 1970 in philosophy at the University of Innsbruck on the subject "Geometrie und Wirklichkeit" ("Geometry and Reality"). In 1974 he was appointed to the newly established chair of philosophy of natural sciences at the University of Giessen (Center for Philosophy and Foundations of Science). Kanitscheider was co-editor of the journal Philosophia naturalis, and was also on the advisory board of the journals Folia Humanistica (Barcelona), Argumentos de Razón Técnica (Seville), and Journal for General Philosophy of Science. He was advisory board member of the Giordano Bruno Stiftung from 2004. He died of cancer on June 21, 2017. In his eulogy, Michael Schmidt-Salomon praises Bernulf Kanitscheider as one of the "most important pioneers of naturalism and enlightened hedonism".
