Oerter, Rolf

Prof. Dr. Rolf Oerter, developmental psychologist

Rolf Oerter was born in 1931 and graduated from high school in 1950 in Schweinfurt. From 1952 to 1955 he worked as a primary school teacher. In 1960 he received his university diploma in psychology, followed by his PhD in 1963 and his habilitation in 1969. From 1969 to 1981 he was a professor in Augsburg. In 1981 he was appointed to the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (Munich), where he headed the chair of developmental psychology from 1981 to 1999. Oerter sits on the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Psychology and Education. In 2003 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon. His main areas of research in recent years have been: Comparative cultural psychology - image of man in Asia and the West among children, adolescents, and adults; research on play behaviour; music psychology; clinical developmental psychology.
