Elke Held was born in Cologne in 1967. Despite growing up liberal, she experienced a Catholic education at an Ursuline boarding school – which led her to question religious beliefs even more rigorously. After graduating from high school she spent a year au-pairing in Paris and then studied psychology at the University of Trier.

After completing her studies, she attended a one-year PR training course at the German Academy for Public Relations and worked fee-based for various non-profit organisations. Afterwards she worked as a psychologist in child and youth welfare for several years. Elke Held has been a member of the gbs management team since 2008 and is responsible for the newsletter editorial, the gbs website, and the foundation's office in Besslich (Schmidt-Salomon office). As of 2014 she is business manager of the Giordano Bruno Stiftung.
