Is Humanity Living Up to Its Global Responsibility?
In 2024, the Giordano Bruno Foundation focused on the central theme "Humanity in the Anthropocene," emphasizing that there is only this ONE humanity, which must shape this ONE biosphere on its home planet responsibly. The wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as Donald Trump's renewed triumph in the USA, suggest that humanity may be failing in this global challenge. However, 2024 also saw glimmers of hope pointing in a more progressive direction.

1st Quarter: January to March
January
- Shortly before the 9th anniversary of the attack on the satirical magazine "Charlie Hebdo" (January 7, 2024), gbs board member Michael Schmidt-Salomon announces a campaign to abolish abolish the "blasphemy paragraph" 166 of the German Criminal Code, which has increasingly been used by Islamists to undermine an open society. In an interview with the Westdeutsche Zeitung, he explains: "German politicians always express their outrage when alleged 'blasphemers' are executed in Iran or Saudi Arabia. This reaction would be far more credible if § 166 StGB were removed from our legal system."
- On January 8, the gbs released a 20-minute video on its central theme, "Humanity in the Anthropocene." The foundation not only explained how the concept of the "Anthropocene," or "the human epoch," came about but also clarified that it was not initially intended to be as negative as it is often perceived today. In fact, Dutch Nobel laureate Paul Crutzen's intention wasn't to overcome the Anthropocene by fundamentally reducing human influence on Earth's systems. Rather, his goal was to replace the "bad" Anthropocene, in which we affect nature recklessly, with a "good" Anthropocene, in which humanity fulfills its planetary responsibility. According to the gbs, achieving this would require enriching the Anthropocene with the best humanity has to offer—not with plastic waste, environmental toxins, and hostile ideologies, but with the great achievements of science, philosophy, and art.
- "Compensation Instead of Pious Words!": Under this slogan, the Giordano Bruno Foundation (gbs), together with survivors of sexual abuse, protest in Hanover on January 25 against the German Protestant Church's (EKD) delaying tactics. The protest takes place in response to the anticipated release of a major study on sexual violence within the EKD and its social welfare organization, Diakonie.
February

From February 6 to March 12, the high-profile event series "The Appeal of the Senses - Perception and Brain" takes place at the Nicolaus Copernicus Planetarium in Nuremberg. The events are organized by the Kortizes Institute in cooperation with the gbs and the Nuremberg Education Center.

"Free Charlie!": By the 10th anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo attack on January 7, 2025, the so-called "blasphemy law" (§ 166 StGB) should be history! This is the ambitious goal of a parliamentary petition submitted by the "Free Charlie!" campaign, which is available for signatures starting January 20. The background: Under German law, the surviving members of Charlie Hebdo's editorial team could have been prosecuted because their cartoons prompted fundamentalists to commit acts of terror. According to § 166 StGB, anyone who "insults the content of another person's religious or ideological beliefs in a manner likely to disturb public peace" can be punished with a fine or imprisonment of up to three years. Alongside the petition's release, the "Free Charlie!" website goes live, and a short campaign video garnered over a million views online.

- "An Unmistakable Signal for More Freedom": The "Free Charlie!" campaign reminds (then-still-serving) Federal Justice Minister Marco Buschmann of an essay he co-authored in 2015 with Finance Minister Christian Lindner, in which they both advocated for the repeal of § 166 of the Criminal Code. The essay states verbatim: "Anyone who wants to restrict freedom of speech, art, and press should be met with more freedom, not less. For those who value this message, there is a clear symbol available: the abolition of the blasphemy law, § 166 StGB. This would be an unmistakable signal for greater freedom of opinion, art, and press." The gbs board comments: "One can only hope that the Justice Minister recalls his wise words from 2015 and acts accordingly. After all, what one reasonably advocated as an opposition politician should also be implemented when in government."

On March 24, Michael Schmidt-Salomon presents his new book "Die Evolution des Denkens. Das moderne Weltbild – und wem wir es verdanken" (The Evolution of Thought: The Modern Worldview – and Whom We Owe It To) at the gbs headquarters. Published by Piper to mark the 20th anniversary of the Giordano Bruno Foundation (2004–2024), the book is a tribute to the thinkers whose insights have shaped the foundation's philosophy: Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Alfred Wegener, Carl Sagan, Epicurus, Friedrich Nietzsche, Karl Marx, Karl Popper, and Julian Huxley. The event at "Haus Weitblick," which also includes an awards ceremony for the best entries in the "We Progress Through Error!" essay competition, is fully booked within days. Additional readings in Switzerland and Germany, some organized by gbs regional groups, are also well attended.

"§ 166 Protects Antisemites – It Does Not Protect Against Antisemitism": The "Free Charlie!" campaign learns from political circles in Berlin that some politicians are hesitant to abolish § 166 of the Criminal Code out of fear it might fuel antisemitism. In an interview published on March 25 on the gbs website and the Humanistic Press Service (hpd) portal, gbs spokesperson Michael Schmidt-Salomon strongly counters: "Anyone holding such a position apparently has little knowledge of the history of this censorship law, which has disproportionately been used against Jewish intellectuals. It is no coincidence that Jewish thinkers like Kurt Tucholsky were among the most vocal opponents of blasphemy laws. One thing is clear: Those advocating for the retention of § 166 StGB are not protecting 'the' Jews but endorsing a legal provision that, in effect, considers secular Jews less worthy of protection than religious Jews. In a way, this stance aligns against Israel’s democratic, anti-fundamentalist protest movement while supporting the religious-nationalist fanaticism of ultra-orthodox settlers and the Netanyahu government."

"The Kristina Hänel Case and Its Consequences": "Perhaps, in retrospect, it will be seen as an 'irony of fate' that radical anti-abortion activists inadvertently advanced the cause of the women's rights movement," writes physician Kristina Hänel in Volume 5 of the "Schriften zum Weltanschauungsrecht" (Writings on Worldview Law), published by Nomos in March. It was, in fact, the lawsuits against Hänel and others that triggered the renewed debate on decriminalizing abortion. The freely available anthology by the Institute for Secular Law (ifw) outlines the developments that led to this shift.
- Year after year, secular groups remind the public that the so-called "dance ban" on Good Friday does not apply to those who oppose the "Silent Days" on ideological grounds. For this reason, numerous "Heidenspaß" (Heathen Fun) parties take place across Germany at the end of March, as well as with screenings of Monty Python's "Life of Brian", which cannot be shown publicly due to holiday laws. In Munich alone, 47 parties are organized on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. A particular highlight is the "Clubrevolution – Gegen das Tanzverbot an Feiertagen" (Club Revolution – Against the Holiday Dance Ban), featuring 14 events on Maundy Thursday.
2nd Quarter: April to June
April
- "Infinite Spaces": From April 12 to 14, the Copernicus Symposium 2024 will take place in Nuremberg, focusing on the past, present, and future of space exploration. The symposium is organized by the Kortizes Institute, the Center for Applied Philosophy of Science and Key Qualifications at Friedrich-Alexander University (ZIWIS), and the Nikolaus Copernicus Planetarium in cooperation with the Giordano Bruno Foundation.
- The report by the "Kommission zur reproduktiven Selbstbestimmung und Fortpflanzungsmedizin" (Commission on Reproductive Self-Determination and Reproductive Medicine), published on April 15, is met with "broad approval" by the board of the Institute for Secular Law (ifw). "Even though we view some aspects critically, there is no doubt that this is an important step toward decriminalizing abortion," explains Jessica Hamed, Deputy Director of the ifw. A few days earlier, the institute's legal experts had discussed the reform of abortion legislation, the civil law processing of abuse cases, the abolition of the "blasphemy paragraph" (§166 of the German Criminal Code), and the necessary reform of church labor law during the 8th advisory board meeting at "Haus Weitblick".
May
- In May 2024, the Giordano Bruno Foundation has to bid farewell to two long-standing advisory board members: On May 5, Gerhard Rampp, the "Grandmaster of Numbers," who had criticized the "limping separation of church and state" long before the gbs was founded, passes away. Only three weeks later, the foundation learns of the death of the renowned developmental psychologist Rolf Oerter, a "true philantrope," who inspired the gbs not only through his wise arguments but also through his friendly, open, and gentle nature.
- For Karlheinz Deschner’s 100th birthday on May 23, 2024, the gbs releases the 35-minute documentary "Der Streitschriftsteller" which reflects on the life and work of the author of "The Criminal History of Christianity." Deschner was, as described in the film, "a sharp thorn in the side of his time, continuously reigniting debate," and a crucial driving force behind the founding of the Giordano Bruno Foundation in 2004.
- How did the evolution of moral conscience come about? Is there a freedom-threatening culture war at universities? What legal regulations does artificial intelligence require, and what understanding of consciousness does it suggest? These are just three of the many topics addressed by the scholarship holders of the Bertha von Suttner Study Fund during their meeting at the foundation headquarters from May 24 to 26. Thought-provoking insights are provided by sociobiologist and natural philosopher Eckart Voland, ethnologist and cultural scientist Susanne Schröter, and philosopher and cognitive scientist Thomas Metzinger.
- "Catholic Missionizing at the Expense of the State": For ten years, the "11th Commandment" action group has been traveling to every Protestant and Catholic Day with its three-meter-tall Moses figure, reminding the public of the "11th Commandment" ("Thou shalt pay for thy church congress thyself!"). At the Catholic Day in Erfurt (May 29 – June 1, 2024), "Moses" is accompanied by the well-known sculptures of the "Hammock Bishop" and the "Money Hamster," highlighting a "double scandal": while the Catholic Church continues to receive millions in state subsidies, victims of sexual abuse remain without adequate support or compensation.

- Has Politics Truly Understood the Problem of Islamism? Following the deadly knife attack in Mannheim, there are increasing calls for tougher state action against Islamists. However, this reaction is coming quite late, according to a press release by the Giordano Bruno Foundation on June 5: "For many years now, not only ex-Muslims and critics of Islam have faced severe threats, but also advocates of an open-minded Islam like Seyran Ateş, whose liberal mosque became a target of ISIS. Unfortunately, we must note a tragic failure of the established parties here, whose ignorance has not only strengthened Islamism but also fueled right-wing populism in Germany."
- "Check your Dogma!" (1): Every worldview has its own narrative, a coherent—or closed—worldview. As a result, debates often do not aim at shared insights but rather at dominance over the opponent. How can one resist this pull of polarization that stands in the way of striving for a better future? This is one of the central questions addressed at the gbs Summer Forum 2024, once again inviting young people who are still studying or in an early phase of their careers
- In mid-June, 42 associations and organizations, including the Giordano Bruno Foundation, the Central Council of the Non-Denominational, the AWO Federal Association, Amnesty International, the DGB and pro familia, address Federal Chancellor Scholz, the federal ministers and the members of the Bundestag from the governing parties. In an open letter, they call on the federal government to present a draft law for the reform of abortion regulations for consultation and vote in the Bundestag during this legislative period.
- With around 2,000 visitors, the philosophy festival "Philo.live!" celebrates a successful premiere in Berlin on June 29. "Was heißt hier Freiheit?" ("What Is This 'Freedom'?") is the guiding question, which is explored in multifaceted ways across eight largely sold-out individual events. Following the successful premiere, "Philo.live!" is set to return to the federal capital in November 2025 on several event days. "Philo.live! 2024" is organized by "Philosophie Magazin" and "phil.COLOGNE" in cooperation with the Giordano Bruno Foundation, the "Udo Keller Stiftung", and the "C.H. Beck Kulturstiftung".
3rd Quarter: July to September
July
- As in the preceding months, larger events also take place at the foundation's headquarters in July. From July 5 to 7, the gbs regional groups meet there to coordinate the agenda for the coming months. From July 19 to 21, the Humanistic Press Service (hpd), the Society for the Scientific Investigation of Pseudosciences (GWUP) and the gbs organize a secular journalists' meeting at Haus Weitblick, where Marcus Bensmann (Correctiv) and Philipp Möller (Central Council of the Non-Denominational), among others, address the question of how to succeed in placing secular topics in the media.
- At the end of July, the gbs announces that it is supporting a new skeptics organization founded by long-time GWUP chairman Amardeo Sarma: "Scientific Temper" aims to promote a "modest, scientifically open-minded way of thinking". The term "Scientific Temper" was already used in the 19th century to describe a critical, fact-oriented mindset that is always ready to "embrace new light, new insights, new experiments, even if their results challenge preconceived opinions and long-held theories".
August
- "In the Light of Gerhard Vollmer": Hardly anyone has illuminated the significance of evolutionary theory for philosophy as comprehensively as the physicist and philosopher Gerhard Vollmer. For the 80th birthday of the gbs and HAI advisory board member, the anthology "Im Lichte der Evolution" ("In the Light of Evolution") is published in early August, impressively demonstrating that intellectual rigor and humor are by no means mutually exclusive. Over the course of the year, two further books in honor of Gerhard Vollmer will be published with the involvement of people from the foundation's environment, namely the anthology "Emporgeirrt! Evolutionäre Erkenntnisse in Natur und Kultur" ("Erring Upward! Evolutionary Insights in Nature and Culture"), to which many of the philosopher's companions have contributed, as well as the essay collection "Wir irren uns empor" ("Upward Through Error"), in which the best contributions from the previous year's HAI young talent competition are published.
- Woelki moves into the House of History: The Giordano Bruno Foundation's action group "11. Gebot" ("11th Commandment") had brought the "Zappel-Woelki" ("Jiggling Woelki") to Cologne Cathedral Square in June 2023 to protest against the cover-up of the clerical abuse scandal. Since August 2024, the sculpture by the Düsseldorf carnival float builder (and gbs advisory board member) Jacques Tilly has been on display at the Bonn "Haus der Geschichte". It is not the only exhibit of the foundation that has made it into the museum. Previously, the "Haus der Geschichte" had already integrated the gbs banner "Aufklärung auf Katholisch" ("Enlightenment, Catholic Style") into its collection to document the clerical abuse scandal. Several years earlier, the poster for the first "Critical Islam Conference" (2008) was also included there. The visual motif of the young woman triumphantly holding up her discarded veil later became popular during the protests of the Iranian women's movement against the Mullah regime.
- Farewell to Religion: For the first time in German history, non-religious people represent just as large a share of the population at 46 percent as Catholics and Protestants combined (24 + 22 percent). At the same time, only 5 percent of the population regularly attend a church, synagogue, or mosque. This emerges from the data presented by the "Forschungsgruppe Weltanschauungen in Deutschland" (fowid, "Research Group on Worldviews in Germany") on 28 August.
September
- "Check your Dogma!" (2): Around 1,000 artists from all over Germany followed the call for submissions by the Düsseldorfer Aufklärungsdienst (DA!) and submitted their works for the "DA! Art-Award", which in 2024 was held under the motto "Check your Dogma!". The best 90 works are exhibited as part of an art exhibition from September 6 to 28 at the Düsseldorf City Museum. At the award ceremony on September 28, a work receives the audience award which, somewhat piquantly, was not allowed to be shown in the exhibition at all following a veto by the City Museum, namely the (doubly blasphemous) work "Klagemauer auf Koran" ("Wailing Wall on the Qur'an") by Ahmad Rafi.
- At the invitation of the Federal Commissioner for Freedom of Religion and Belief, Frank Schwabe, an expert discussion takes place on 9 September 2024 at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), with participants including Michael Schmidt-Salomon (Giordano Bruno Foundation), Philipp Möller (Central Council of the Non-Denominational) and Mina Ahadi (Central Council of Ex-Muslims). Topics include the religious persecution of non-religious people as well as the domestically and foreign-policy-wise disastrous effects of the German "blasphemy paragraph" 166 of the Criminal Code. Results of the meeting are incorporated into a brochure on "Weltanschauungsfreiheit" ("Freedom of Belief and Worldview"), which Frank Schwabe publishes in October 2024 (see below).
- Nationwide protests against § 218 of the Criminal Code: From September 21 to 28, a week of action for the decriminalization of abortion takes place. A corresponding draft law is long overdue, states the call by the "Bündnis für sexuelle Selbstbestimmung" ("Alliance for Sexual Self-Determination"). With reference to the recommendations of the "Kommission zur reproduktiven Selbstbestimmung und Fortpflanzungsmedizin" ("Commission on Reproductive Self-Determination and Reproductive Medicine"), the gbs executive board comments: "That the traffic-light coalition government has not used this proposal to present a corresponding draft law is a serious political mistake! This applies not least to the necessary political confrontation with the AfD. For in eastern Germany, the overwhelming majority advocates for a liberalization of abortion, while the AfD, due to its Christian fundamentalist wing, demands stricter laws. If one wants to combat the AfD effectively, one should target it precisely in those areas where it holds completely different positions from a large part of its electorate."
- The Bertha von Suttner-Studienwerk (BvS) files a lawsuit against a decision by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), which rejected the Studienwerk's application for recognition and financial support "for lack of federal interest" (!). Unaffected by the lawsuit, the BvS, on whose board the deputy gbs chairwoman Ulla Wessels serves, continues its work. It will continue to support gifted young people who, in a humanistic spirit, place their talents and abilities in the service of science and society. Demand remains high: in the current call for applications for the "Suttner Scholarship 2024", over 250 applications have been received by the foundation, as the BvS reports on its website...
4. Quartal: Oktober bis Dezember
Oktober
- »Im Keller des Geistes«: Schon Sigmund Freud ahnte, dass wir nicht »Herr im eigenen Haus« sind. Wahrnehmungsinhalte werden gefiltert, Aufmerksamkeit abgelenkt, Handlungsmotive verrechnet, Erinnerungen konstruiert und Gefühle aufgebaut – alles ohne bewusste Steuerung. Aber sind wir den Entscheidungen unseres Gehirns tatsächlich hilflos ausgeliefert? Beim Kortizes-Symposium 2024, das mit Unterstützung der gbs und der Zeitschrift »Gehirn & Geist« vom 4. bis 6. Oktober im Germanischen Nationalmuseum Nürnberg stattfindet, ergründen renommierte Expertinnen und Experten die spannenden Facetten des Unbewussten.
- 2024 wird erstmalig der bundesweite »GöthE«-Schülerpreis ausgeschrieben. Dabei steht »GöthE« für »Götterfreie Humanistische Ethik«. Stifter des Preises ist die »Kirche des Fliegenden Spaghettimonsters Deutschland«, die auch Mitglied im Förderkreis der Giordano-Bruno-Stiftung ist. Bis zum 31.12. können Schülerinnen und Schüler (sowohl als Einzelpersonen als auch in Gruppen) Arbeiten einreichen, die ethische Fragen der Gegenwart beleuchten, Grundsätze der eigenen Lebensführung hinterfragen und Begründungen für humanistische Werte entwickeln, ohne dabei auf religiöse Vorstellungen zurückzugreifen. Die Giordano-Bruno-Stiftung unterstützt die Preisvergabe nicht zuletzt auch mit Blick auf ihr Schwerpunktthema 2025 »Mein Kopf gehört mir!«, das sich mit der Frage auseinandersetzen wird, wie Kinder in einer offenen Gesellschaft aufwachsen sollten.
- »Kann Philosophie die Welt verändern?«: Vor 20 Jahren wurde die Giordano-Bruno-Stiftung gegründet. Das »bruno.«-Jahresmagazin 2024 nimmt dies zum Anlass, um an einen ihrer zentralen Impulsgeber (Karlheinz Deschner) zu erinnern, die bewusstseinsverändernde Macht der Bilder, Philosophie und Rechtspolitik zu ergründen und darzulegen, dass die Menschheit möglicherweise doch zu mehr noch taugen könnte als bloß zu einem »geologischen Ereignis«, das die Klimaerwärmung ausgelöst hat.
- Bevor der SPD-Politiker Frank Schwabe sein Amt im BMZ übernahm, trug seine Stabstelle den Titel »Beauftragter für Religionsfreiheit«, was der neue Amtsinhaber durch den Begriff der »Weltanschauungsfreiheit« ergänzt hat. In der im Oktober erschienenen Broschüre »Weltanschauungsfreiheit weltweit stärken!« erläutert Schwabe nun, was er unter diesem Begriff versteht. Die gbs bewertet die Veröffentlichung als »ausgesprochen positiv«: »Frank Schwabe hat die zentrale Bedeutung der Weltanschauungsfreiheit im modernen Rechtsstaat klar erkannt. Leider ist diese Einsicht noch längst nicht bei den anderen Bundesministerien angekommen. Noch immer werden religiöse Weltanschauungen gegenüber nichtreligiösen in vielerlei Hinsicht privilegiert, obgleich dies eklatant gegen das Verfassungsgebot der weltanschaulichen Neutralität des Staates verstößt. In dieser Hinsicht werden wir wohl noch einige dicke Bretter bohren müssen.«

- Die Kirche vor Gericht: Jens Windel wurde zwischen seinem neunten und elften Lebensjahr in rund 90 Fällen von einem katholischen Pfarrer missbraucht, der bereits 20 Jahre zuvor auffällig geworden war und von der Kirche insgesamt fünfmal versetzt wurde. Um dem wegweisenden Schmerzensgeldprozess vor dem Landgericht Hildesheim die notwendige Aufmerksamkeit zu verschaffen, ist die gbs-Aktionsgruppe »11. Gebot« mit dem »Hängemattenbischof« vom 6. bis 8. November in Hildesheim vor Ort. Dass die Kirche in dem Verfahren »Einrede auf Verjährung« erhebt, ist für David Farago, Leiter der Aktionsgruppe »11. Gebot«, eine »Ungeheuerlichkeit ersten Ranges«: »Eine Kirche, die für vorgebliche Enteignungen vor mehr als 200 Jahren Jahr für Jahr Hunderte Millionen vom deutschen Staat kassiert, weigert sich, Schmerzensgeld für Taten zu zahlen, die in ihrem Verantwortungsbereich vor gerade einmal 40 Jahren passiert sind! Hier sind wirklich alle Dimensionen verrutscht!«
- Es ist so gekommen, wie es viele befürchtet haben: Donald Trump zieht abermals ins »Weiße Haus« ein, was die »Internationale der Nationalisten« noch einmal stärken wird. Die Gründe für seinen Wahlerfolg sind im Grunde dieselben wie bei seiner ersten Kandidatur 2016. In ihrem Kommentar zur US-Wahl greift die gbs daher auf den Artikel »Die offene Gesellschaft steht auf dem Spiel« zurück, den gbs-Sprecher Michael Schmidt-Salomon Anfang 2017 für den Piper-Band »Wir haben die Wahl« geschrieben hat.
- Der »Politische Islam« ist zu einer Bedrohung für die Freiheit und Sicherheit in Deutschland geworden. In dieser Einschätzung sind sich liberale Muslime, säkulare Muslime und religionsfreie Islamismusexpert*innen einig. Vom 22. bis 24. November treffen sich führende Vertreter*innen der Islamismuskritik am gbs-Sitz in Oberwesel, um zu beratschlagen, wie es besser gelingen kann, der Gefahr des Politischen Islam sowie des Rechtsextremismus entgegenzuwirken. Dabei wird unter anderem ein ausführlicher Resolutionstext erarbeitet, der konkrete Schritte zur Islamismusbekämpfung aufzeigt. Bilder von dem Treffen sind schon ins Netz gelangt, mit ihren Positionen und Aktivitäten will die Gruppe allerdings erst 2025 in die Öffentlichkeit gehen.
- Die Giordano-Bruno-Stiftung erweitert ihr Medienangebot um ein neues Audio-Format: Der Podcast »SINNERFÜLLT: Humanistische Lebensgeschichten« lädt seit Ende November zu persönlichen Begegnungen mit Menschen ein, die humanistische Werte in ihrem Leben und Wirken verkörpern. Anders als theoretische Abhandlungen stellt das von Susanne Bell moderierte Format die individuellen Erfahrungen und Biografien in den Mittelpunkt.
Dezember
- Durch den Bruch der Ampelkoalition ist es fraglich, ob es tatsächlich zur Entkriminalisierung des Schwangerschaftsabbruchs kommt, die nach 30 Jahren Debattenstillstand möglich erschien. Davon lassen sich die rund 100 Organisationen jedoch nicht entmutigen, die für den 7. Dezember zu Großdemos aufgerufen haben. Gestützt wird ihr Anliegen durch Bundestagsabgeordnete, die einen Gesetzentwurf eingereicht haben, um den Schwangerschaftsabbruch doch noch bis zur nächsten Bundestagswahl zu legalisieren. Allerdings besteht die Gefahr, dass der Gesetzentwurf nach der ersten Lesung aufgrund wahltaktischer Überlegungen von CDU/CSU, FDP und AfD im Rechtsausschuss des Deutschen Bundestags steckenbleibt. Um dies zu verhindern, hat das »Bündnis für sexuelle Selbstbestimmung« am 12. Dezember eine Online-Petition gestartet, die fordert, dass das Parlament über den Entwurf abstimmen kann: »JETZT ist keine Zeit mehr für Partei- und Wahltaktik: Eine demokratische Entscheidung darf nicht unterlaufen werden! Machen Sie den Weg frei für eine überfällige Neuregelung, die insbesondere ungewollt Schwangeren endlich die Unterstützung gibt, die sie verdienen!« Die Petition kann unter diesem Link unterzeichnet werden.
- Auch die von der gbs forcierte Abschaffung des »Gotteslästerungsparagrafen« 166 StGB ist durch den Bruch der Ampelkoalition unwahrscheinlicher geworden. Dies hält die »Free Charlie!«-Kampagne jedoch nicht davon ab, an ihren wohlbegründeten Zielen festzuhalten. Zum 10. Jahrestag des Anschlags auf »Charlie Hebdo« (7.1.2025) wird die Kampagne einen Film veröffentlichen, der die »subversive Kraft des Humors« preist und die fatalen Konsequenzen beleuchtet, die mit dem »Gotteslästerungsparagrafen« seit jeher verbunden sind. Der Film ist derzeit in der Mache und wird am 7.1. an verschiedenen Orten Deutschlands gezeigt werden. Am gleichen Tag wird auch das Kampagnen-Buch »Free Charlie! Satire kann man nicht töten« erscheinen, das mit einigen der schärfsten religionskritischen Karikaturen der letzten Jahre aufwartet. Erste Infos zum Buch findet man auf der »Free Charlie!«-Website.
- [Nachtrag 21.12.2024] »Der Terrorakt von Taleb A. führt uns vor Augen, dass nicht nur Islamisten Weihnachtsmärkte mit Fahrzeugen angreifen, sondern auch rechte Verschwörungsfanatiker«, erklärte Michael Schmidt-Salomon am Tag nach dem Anschlag auf den Magdeburger Weihnachtsmarkt. Der Tatverdächtige war für die gbs kein Unbekannter. Der aus Saudi-Arabien stammende Arzt und Psychiater hat den Zentralrat der Ex-Muslime und die Säkulare Flüchtlingshilfe über mehrere Jahre hinweg diffamiert. Öffentlich teilte er Überzeugungen aus dem ultrarechten Spektrum und glaubte an eine großangelegte Verschwörung, die darauf abzielt, Deutschland zu islamisieren. Seine wahnhaften Vorstellungen gingen so weit, dass er annahm, selbst islamismuskritische Organisationen seien Teil der islamistischen Verschwörung. Eine Aktivistin der Säkularen Flüchtlingshilfe hatte bereits im vergangenen Jahr Strafanzeige gegen Taleb A. eingereicht und die Staatsanwaltschaft vor einem Anschlag gewarnt, den dieser vorbereiten würde. Das LKA Sachsen-Anhalt kam in seiner Bewertung jedoch zu dem Schluss, dass von Taleb A. keine konkrete Bedrohung ausgehe – zu Unrecht, wie der verhängnisvolle Anschlag in Magdeburg gezeigt hat.
Fazit
2024 war abermals ein hochdramatisches Jahr – nicht zuletzt aufgrund der außenpolitischen Entwicklungen (Kriege in der Ukraine und in Nahost, Sturz des Assad-Regimes in Syrien, Wiederwahl Donald Trumps zum US-Präsidenten). Innenpolitisch gab es zunächst begründete Hoffnung, dass sowohl der alte Abtreibungsparagraf 218 StGB als auch der ebenso überkommene Gotteslästerungsparagraf 166 StGB endlich abgeschafft werden könnten, worauf die gbs schon lange hinarbeitet. Doch das Aus der Ampelregierung und die Blockadehaltung der FDP, die sich offenkundig schon weit von ihrem bürgerrechtlichen Liberalismus der 1970er Jahre entfernt hat, lassen dies gegenwärtig mehr als fraglich erscheinen. Immerhin: In Teilen des linksliberalen Lagers ist inzwischen die Erkenntnis gereift, dass es nicht progressiv sein kann, Islamofaschisten zu unterstützen, was u.a. zum überfälligen Verbot des »Islamischen Zentrums Hamburg« (IZH) geführt hat. Nicht klar ist allerdings, ob diese Schritte wirklich aus Einsicht eingeleitet wurden oder bloß aus Angst vor weiteren Wahlerfolgen der AfD.
Erfreulich aus Sicht der Giordano-Bruno-Stiftung war 2024 die Erkenntnis, dass viele ihrer Positionen inzwischen von weiten Teilen der Bevölkerung akzeptiert werden. Dies war bei der Gründung der gbs vor 20 Jahren noch deutlich anders: 2004 wurde sie in den Medien noch wegen ihres vermeintlich »militanten Atheismus« attackiert – und als sie kurz darauf auf die schwere psychische, physische und sexuelle Gewalt hinwies, die viele Kinder und Jugendliche in kirchlichen Institutionen erlitten hatte, wurde sie sogar in die Nähe des »Kirchenkampfs« der Nationalsozialisten gerückt. Wie sehr sich das gesellschaftliche Klima mittlerweile gewandelt hat, zeigte beispielshaft die dreiteilige »Terra X«-Doku »Macht der Götter«, die an Karfreitag, Ostersonntag und Ostermontag zur besten Sendezeit im ZDF ausgestrahlt wurde und in der Michael Schmidt-Salomon als Interviewpartner und wissenschaftlicher Berater mitwirkte. Erstaunlich positive Resonanz erzielte auch das »Jung & Naiv«-Gespräch mit dem gbs-Vorsitzenden, das im Mai online ging und seither über 650.000-mal aufgerufen wurde.
Bemerkenswert war auch ein im November erschienener Artikel der TAZ, der die Kritik der gbs an der religiösen Besetzung des Deutschen Ethikrats aufgriff. Autor Ralf Nestmeyer forderte darin, dass »gerade bei kontroversen Themen wie der Sterbehilfe oder Fragen zu reproduktiven Rechten auch die Perspektive konfessionsloser und säkularer Menschen vertreten sein« sollte: »Ulla Wessels, die Praktische Philosophie an der Universität des Saarlandes lehrt und Vorstandsmitglied der Giordano-Bruno-Stiftung ist, wäre beispielsweise eine gute Wahl gewesen. Ohne die Berücksichtigung dieser Stimmen entsteht das Risiko ethischer Empfehlungen, die die Interessen und Überzeugungen eines großen Teils der Bevölkerung unberücksichtigt lässt.«
Bezüglich der eingangs gestellten Frage, ob die Menschheit ihrer globalen Verantwortung im »Anthropozän« gerecht wird, hat sich 2024 allerdings als sehr ernüchternd erwiesen. Möglicherweise lag die »Internationale Union der Geowissenschaften« doch richtig, als sie in diesem Jahr vorschlug, das Anthropozän von einer »geologischen Epoche« zu einem »geologischen Ereignis« herabzustufen. Damit käme der Menschheit erdgeschichtlich eine ähnliche Rolle zu wie dem Kometeneinschlag vor 66 Millionen Jahren, der das Ende der Dinosaurier einleitete. Die Gefahr ist jedenfalls nicht von der Hand zu weisen, dass die »Internationale der Nationalisten« mit ihrem Mix aus nationalem Chauvinismus und reaktionären religiösen Werten alle Chancen auf eine effektive internationale Zusammenarbeit untergräbt, die mit Blick auf die Herausforderungen des Anthropozäns so dringend erforderlich wäre.
Allerdings: Für eine Kurskorrektur ist es noch nicht zu spät. Noch haben wir die klimatische Nische einer eiszeitlichen Warmzeit nicht vollends zerstört. Doch es wird Zeit, dass die Menschheit erwachsen wird, die kosmischen Realitäten anerkennt und sich ihrer planetaren Verantwortung stellt. Die Giordano-Bruno-Stiftung wird an diesen Themen auch in Zukunft weiterarbeiten und – trotz allen Widerständen, die gerade auch in diesem Jahr offenkundig wurden – die Hoffnung nicht aufgeben, dass wir die Dinge besser machen können als in der Vergangenheit.
Die Philosophie des evolutionären Humanismus ist eben nicht zuletzt auch mit dem Glauben an die Entwicklungsfähigkeit unserer Spezies verbunden. Zumindest sollten wir es nicht prinzipiell ausschließen, dass wir Menschen uns doch noch, wie es im Schwerpunktartikel der aktuellen «bruno.«-Ausgabe heißt, »des ungeheuren Privilegs als würdig erweisen, das uns zuteilwurde, nämlich, dass dieser uralte Kosmos in uns zu einem Bewusstsein seiner selbst erwacht ist. Schließlich ist es alles andere als eine Selbstverständlichkeit, dass wir Sternenstaub sind, der weiß, dass er Sternenstaub ist. Schon allein diese Erkenntnis sollte uns davon abhalten, die Menschheit schlechtzureden.«
